Sometimes you just have to shake your head at the stupid things people do. Why is it that the Israelites never learned? Why is it that people today continue to fall into the same traps?
Samuel's sons were not like their father, they were greedy and corrupt. As a result the Jewish leaders went to Samuel and told him they wanted a king... so they could be like everyone else. Like everyone else? God's chosen people decided that they would rather be like the other people who had kings. Kidding, right? Nope.
Samuel was displeased, but God told him not to worry, the people were not rejecting Samuel, they were rejecting God. Then God told Samuel o explain to the people what would happen if they got a king. So he told them...
“This is how a king will reign over you,The king will draft your sons and assign them to his chariots and his charioteers, making them run before his chariots. Some will be generals and captains in his army, some will be forced to plow in his fields and harvest his crops, and some will make his weapons and chariot equipment. The king will take your daughters from you and force them to cook and bake and make perfumes for him. He will take away the best of your fields and vineyards and olive groves and give them to his own officials. He will take a tenth of your grain and your grape harvest and distribute it among his officers and attendants. He will take your male and female slaves and demand the finest of your cattle and donkeys for his own use. He will demand a tenth of your flocks, and you will be his slaves. When that day comes, you will beg for relief from this king you are demanding, but then the Lord will not help you.”So they said "my bad" we don't want a king after all. Wrong. They said that they didn't care and wanted a king anyway. Stupid. People haven't changed much, they'd still rather have an earthly king, than a heavenly father. Sad.
