Secrets

Bible Readings... John 16
Highlighted Verse... John 16:12 - I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear.
Thoughts... Knowing what Jesus was about to go through, the immediate application of Jesus' words are pretty clear; however, the words are just as meaningful to us today. God desires to share so much with us, but knows that we aren't ready to receive it yet. Perhaps that is why we can see new insights in God's Word even after multiple readings. Watchman Nee, Chinese pastor and author, was said to have read the entire New Testament every week for 10 years. My guess is that he found new food for thought each week.
How it impressed me... When I look at the principle behind this verse and it is easy to see how I apply the same concepts to my children... there are some things they are not ready to bear... some things they don't need to know yet... some things that must wait for their experiences to catch up with. And I see that God has been holding back on me, not because he has a secret that he wants to hide from me, but rather that he knows I'm not yet ready for. I long for the day when God will make everything clear, but somehow I think I will no longer be interested in knowledge when I come face to face with the Creator of Knowledge.
My response to God... Mighty God, Omniscient Father, Creator of Knowledge and All Things. I praise you and give you the glory. Open my eyes and heart to your Word. Fill me with your Word that I may see. Help Me.

Fruit Bearer

Bible Readings... John 15
Highlighted Verse... John 15:8 - This is to my Father's glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.
Thoughts... From the Good News Translation it reads: "My Father's glory is shown by your bearing much fruit; and in this way you become my disciples." Upon examination these are essentially the same, but the Good News version seems to make the intent a little clearer to me. In fact, it may be a little too clear. If we wish to glorify the Father and become Jesus' disciple, we must bear fruit.
How it impressed me... I don't read this as a salvation issue, but rather as one of fulfilling the plan God has annointed for us... rising to the expectaions that Jesus has for us... being one with Jesus... one with the Father. What fruit will we bear today?
My response to God... Glorious Father, Master of everything, I desire to bear fruit to your glory, I desire to be a disciple of Jesus, help me to bear fruit at work, in the community, at home and in your house that you might be glorified and others might know you.

Peace Be With You

Bible Readings... John 14
Highlighted Verse... John 14:1 - Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me. John 14:27 - Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.
Thoughts... Jesus is nearing his appointment with the cross and wants to make sure that the disciples understand the most important of his teachings, so he repeats them over and over. The teachings are not complex, but they are hard for earthly ears. The meat of his teaching in this chapter is his oneness with God and how important it is for the disciples to be one with him by obeying his commands as he obeys the father, but he wraps these teachings between a gift that his followers were sure to need in the days to follow... the gift of his peace.
How it impressed me... God always knows exactly what we need. If we trust him with everything, he will never let us down. Jesus knew that if the disciples were going to make it long enough to apply his teachings and share them with followers to come, they would need all the peace and comfort he could give them. There would be plenty to trouble their hearts in the days ahead... but his peace, which is unlike worldly peace, would see them through anything the world would send their way, so that they could come out the other side.
My response to God... Glorious father, maker of heaven and earth, you know my heart, you know my failures and my weaknesses, and you know what I need even when I don't. Thank you for supplying my deepest needs... even when I'm confused by my desires. FIll me with your truth, grace, and peace.

Knowing Whose You Are

Bible Readings... John 13
Highlighted Verse... John 13:3-4 - Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist.
Thoughts... Having confidence that his Father had everything under control and that he came from God and was going to return to God, Jesus was secure. He didn't doubt who he belonged to... he didn't doubt what his destiny was... he didn't doubt who was in charge. This confidence and faith in everything that was, is and will be, allowed him to take on the humble trappings of servant to his followers.
How it impressed me... Much in our society is made of knowing "who" you are. Seminars are given on it, books are written about it, and counselors strive to get their patients to realize it, but like many things in this world, they get it close but not quite right. Instead of knowing "who" you are, if we focus on "whose" we are, we can move from a self-centered arrogance to a God-centered servanthood.
My response to God... Father God, instill in me the firm knowledge of your role in my life... help me in my unbelief to know and trust in you fully... help my eyes to see, my ears to hear, and my heart to grieve over the things that grieve you. Help me to set aside self that I may see only you.

Choose You This Day

Bible Readings... John 12
Highlighted Verse... John 12:42 - Yet at the same time many even among the leaders believed in him. But because of the Pharisees they would not confess their faith for fear they would be put out of the synagogue; for they loved praise from men more than praise from God.
Thoughts... Jesus made his triumphal entry into Jerusalem amid the praises of the people, yet at the sound of his words they shrank away from him. Even many of the leaders liked what they heard him say and do, but were afraid of the Pharisees and their control of access to the synagogue, so like the rich young ruler they went away.
How it impressed me... It is not so much peer pressure that turned away the crowd or the leaders or the rich young ruler since they all had significant advantages... the crowd had numbers, the leaders had positions of authority and the rich young ruler had wealth behind them. Instead, it was their love for the world that drew them away. Jesus demands everything from us if we would follow him... no excuses allowed. Today's reading from "My Utmost for His Highest" speaks a similar word.
Our Lord’s teaching can be summed up in this: the relationship that He demands for us is an impossible one unless He has done a super-natural work in us. Jesus Christ demands that His disciple does not allow even the slightest trace of resentment in his heart when faced with tyranny and injustice. No amount of enthusiasm will ever stand up to the strain that Jesus Christ will put upon His servant. Only one thing will bear the strain, and that is a personal relationship with Jesus Christ Himself— a relationship that has been examined, purified, and tested until only one purpose remains and I can truly say, "I am here for God to send me where He will." Everything else may become blurred, but this relationship with Jesus Christ must never be.
We are given free will to choose who we will follow. Will we like Joshua choose God and his Son, or will we like the crowd and the leaders choose the world.
My response to God... Lord, my Lord, help me to choose correctly. Help me to release the resentment in my heart and fill it with you. I "head" know that you can fill any hole that is left, help me to "heart" know it as well. Do a super-natural work in me... fill me with your grace... extend your mercy to me... that I would find contentment in resting in you.

Doubter or Doer

Bible Readings... John 11
Highlighted Verse... John 11:14-16 - So then he told them plainly, "Lazarus is dead, and for your sake I am glad I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him." Then Thomas (called Didymus) said to the rest of the disciples, "Let us also go, that we may die with him."
Thoughts... Lazarus has died and Jesus is taking the apostles with him to Bethany to raise Lazarus from the dead. The apostles in their usual manner of not understanding Jesus think that Lazarus has fallen asleep, so Jesus has to spell it out for them. The apostles are also worried that if Jesus goes back to Jerusalem (just 2 miles from Bethany) that the high priests will capture and kill him. This time it is not Peter who boldly ventures forth at Jesus' prompting, but Thomas who proclaims that they shall all go with him and face the same fate.
How it impressed me... Several different impressions came over me as I read through this portion of scripture. First, I had always remembered Thomas only as "Doubting Thomas" for his role after Christ's resurrection, but we see him here a a different role. How often do I pigeon-hole others based on a single event in their lives without giving them credit for the remainder of their actions. After reading through a couple of more times I start to notice how the apostles who were with Jesus all day, everyday for three years still didn't understand him and needed to be taught. I too fail to understand his call on my life and need his patient instruction. Finally, I wonder if I would have joined him in that trip to Bethany and on to Jerusalem especially given how much he had been talking lately about his death and all of the narrow escapes he had made recently. Would I be Dan the Doubter or Dan the Doer?
My response to God... Patient Lord, help me to see people through your eyes, full of mercy and grace, instead of through my eyes made blind by pride, teach me to walk in your steps and embolden me to follow you wherever the path leads.

Innocence or Evil

Bible Readings... John 9
Highlighted Verse... John 9:27 - He answered, "I have told you already and you did not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you want to become his disciples, too?"
Thoughts... Several parts of today's reading make me smile... from both real and feigned innocence. In the highlighted verse, the innocence of the blind man contrasts sharply with the evil intentions of the Pharisees. The blind man's innocence brings a fun smile. Later, the Pharisees feign innocence in asking Jesus "What! Are we blind too?" and the smile says more about the gall of the Pharisees.
How it impressed me... One of the lessons from VBS this year was about the blind man. In my presentation of the lesson to the kids, I pretended to make mud from spit and dirt and then put it on a volunteer child. A copule of weeks later, we were up at the UAB hospital visiting with a family and when I spoke to their second grader her greeting was to call me "Spit Man." Often the lesson we are trying to teach is not the lesson that is received! When innocence is the root cause, as with the blind man and the children, it is humorous, but when evil intentions are the root cause, it is just sad.
My response to God... All-knowing Father God, you know my heart... you know when I am innocent and when I am guilty... help me to respond to your call with with trust and faith, setting aside my agenda, my intentions, and my will for your own.

The Law and the Light

Bible Readings... John 8
Highlighted Verse... John 8:13 - The Pharisees challenged him, "Here you are, appearing as your own witness; your testimony is not valid."
Thoughts... The keepers of the Law, after hearing Jesus proclaim that he was "the light of the world" strongly protested. They did not protest based on the veracity of his claim, but rather on a fine point of law... that two witnesses were required to testify to the truth.
How it impressed me... Faced with the promised Messiah, who was giving them the keys to the Kingdom or God, all they could do was stand on the shaky ground of "their" law without acknowledging the Maker of the Law or his Son. How often have I done the same? How often have I taken refuge in a prooftext passage or verse instead of truly seeking to know his way and will.
My response to God... Father God, forgive me for failing to believe that you are the light of the world and that if I will but follow you, that I will not walk in darkness, but instead have the light of your life.

Vanishing Act

Bible Readings... John 7
Highlighted Verse... John 7:30 - At this they tried to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him, because his time had not yet come.
Thoughts... I have always been fascinated by the various instances where the crowd or the temple guards or whoever try to grab Jesus to do him harm or exalt him for their own purposes and he slips away... almost as though vanishing into thin air because his time has not yet come.
How it impressed me... I wonder if there isn't a general principle at work here. When we attempt to "make" God do something for our own purposes, he slips away out of our grasp and we wonder where he went. Contrast that with when we abandon our plans and await his will. We then get the opportunity to sit at the feet of Jesus and hear him teach and be amazed at his knowledge. But we can't get itchy and try to force his hand, he must be our leader.
My response to God... Rabboni, teach me your truths... show me the way... give me life.

How Fickle Can You Get?

Bible Readings... John 6
Highlighted Verse... John 6:14-15 - After the people saw the miraculous sign that Jesus did, they began to say, "Surely this is the Prophet who is to come into the world." Jesus, knowing that they intended to come and make him king by force, withdrew again to a mountain by himself.  John 6:24 - Once the crowd realized that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they got into the boats and went to Capernaum in search of Jesus. John 6:30 - So they asked him, "What miraculous sign then will you give that we may see it and believe you? What will you do?
Thoughts... These verses and many more in this chapter show the heights and depths of our "love" for Jesus. In the beginning, the people want to crown him king since he multiplied the loaves to feed the 5000, when he disappears they go in search of him, but want more miracles. Instead he offers his body and blood as living bread and water they they may partake of for everlasting life, but they leave because this is too "hard" for them.
How it impressed me... How often are we just as fickle? We praise him one day for curing a cold or headache, then the next day we wonder where he is. When he asks us to do something for him, instead of him doing something for us, we say it is too hard and walk away.
My response to God... Precious Jesus, help me to follow after you and seek you always... never letting go... never falling back on my own power, but leaning on your everlasting arms for everything. Help me to follow you in times of plenty and times of drought, when things are easy and when they get hard, depending on you all the while.

The Light Shines

Bible Readings... John 4
Highlighted Verse... John 4:42 - They said to the woman, "We no longer believe just because of what you said; now we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this man really is the Savior of the world."
Thoughts... Centuries before this time, the Samaritans had been led astray by their king so that they no longer faithfully worshipped the God of their father Abraham. They did, however, still have remembrances of the one true God. Now, once they have a chance to have an intimate encounter with God's son they respond in true faith. Meanwhile, the Pharisees (who claimed to worship the true God) were already concerned about Jesus and his impact on their status and position.
How it impressed me... When a person encounters Jesus their true inner self shows through. It is as though the invisble ink that our thoughts are written in is made clearly visible by Jesus' light. The Samaritan's who had been led astray, but desired to worship God are set straight as they see the true God, but the Pharisees who pretend to worship the true God are seen as the self-seekers that they really are. When his light shines on me, what shows?
My response to God... Dear God, take up residence in my heart so that Jesus will only see your reflection when his light is shined on me. Help me to clear your sanctuary of all that is not pure and holy so that you can reside in me. Draw me closer every day.

Born of the Spirit

Bible Readings... John 3
Highlighted Verse... John 3:8 - The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.
Thoughts... Jesus is trying to explain to Nicodemus that he must be born again, and Nicodemus just isn't getting it. My guess is that when Jesus tells Nicodemus he shouldn't be surprised, Nicodemus is very surprised and confused about this concept he had never considered.
How it impressed me... Since Lauren is in her first year of college, I have had many occasions recently to think back to my college days. As a Catholic amongst all the Baptists at Baylor we had a lot of discussions about being born again... a concept that we had never discussed in my CCD (Catholic Sunday School) classes. I never really understood why they wanted to make such a big deal about it, especially since our spiritual maturity was pretty similar -- sorely lacking. Now, a quarter century later, I'm pondering just what is meant by "The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit." In the end, we aren't necessarily meant to know everything in this life, but he will make it clear in the Kingdom to come.
My response to God... Jesus, you became flesh and walked among us so that we could commune with you and the Father... that we could be one with the you and the Father... and so that after you died for our sins, the Holy Spirit would breathe new life into us. Holy Spirit breathe on me each day that I may come to a more complete knowledge of the Father and and his ways.

No Miracles of Faith

Bible Readings... John 2
Highlighted Verse... John 2:24 - But Jesus would not entrust himself to them, for he knew all men.
Thoughts... Jesus had been in Jerusalem for Passover and had performed some miracles. Some of the people who saw the miracles being performed believed in Jesus because of the miracles, but Jesus would not entrust himself to them. Jesus knew that their belief would last only as long as the memory of the miracles, so he would not perform a show for them. He had no intention of selling out to the crowd.
How it impressed me... I think that it may be part of God's design (some translations word the last part of this verse as "because he knew human nature"), that while a miraculous sign might get us to look towards God, it won't keep us there. We cannot simply experience a miracle or sign and then be somehow transformed to true belief. Instead we must make the transition from looking towards God to a decision of the will to complete surrender.
My response to God... Father God, you have written your name across creation... you have written your laws upon my heart... you know me and you know what moves me... help to so order my life that you are foremost in my thoughts, desires, and dreams. Help me to follow your lead and to never act simply because the crowd has requested it, but rather to focus on your will and your way.

God's Son

Bible Readings... John 1
Highlighted Verse... John 1:12-13 Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God.
Thoughts... The phrase "children of God" is not new, but somehow I think that I have always regarded it as somewhat of a metaphor. We are made in the image of God.. and he claims us as his own... he loves us enough to send his son... so, of course, we are "children of God." But what does that really mean? What does it mean to be a child of God?
How it impressed me... John 1:13 seems to tell us something a little different than what I am used to thinking. There doesn't appear to be a metaphor here. Instead, the infallible Word of God says that I am "born of God." That's the type of son I am. Not an adopted son, or a foster son, or a metaphorical son, but born of God — a real son! That's why he loves me so, because I am flesh of his flesh — worth dying for! Halleluia!
My response to God... Father God, thank you for life itself. Thank you for putting up with my continual immaturity. Help me to grow into the Father, Husband, and Son that you have destined me to be.

An Intimate Encounter

Bible Readings... Luke 24
Highlighted Verses... Luke 24:33a - And within the hour they were on their way back to Jerusalem. Luke 24:45 - Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures.
Thoughts... Two men were on the road to Emmaus, they walked and talked with Jesus, but didn't know it was him. As they were stopping for the night, they invited him to spend the night. After he broke the bread, they recognized him and he disappeared, then they changed their mind "and within the hour they were on their way back to Jerusalem." Later when they returned to Jerusalem and were with the other disciples, Jesus appeared to them and "opened their minds to understand the Scriptures".
How it impressed me...  When you have an intimate encounter with the risen Lord... it will change your day... change your night... change your mind... change your life. How sad it must have been for those who didn't encounter him or recognize him when he was here. How sad it is for those who miss him still today.
My response to God...Dear Jesus, help me to experience you afresh each day, that my life will be changed by the encounter. Open my mind to understand your scriptures and help me to never miss and opportunity to walk or talk or dine with you.

Understatement

Bible Readings... Luke 23
Highlighted Verse... Luke 23:56b - on the Sabbath they rested, as the Law of Moses commands.
Thoughts... Chapter 23 of Luke encompasses the entire Passion of Jesus from his appearance before Pilate and Herod, to the the crowd's condemnation and Pilate's death sentence, to the final crucifixion, death and burial. The chapter closes out with the words "on the Sabbath they rested, as the Law of Moses commands." While the words are specifically referring to women who were accompanying Jesus, it is safe to assume that the religious leaders and crowd did likewise. In these plain-spoken words hide the depths of hypocrisy.
How it impressed me... After killing God's son, the people were careful to make certain that they followed God's command about the Sabbath. If only this type of hypocrisy had ended with this episode, but sadly it is still around today. How often have my actions amounted to the same?
My response to God... Merciful Father, forgive me when I sin, help me to worship you in spirit and truth... to give you the honor and glory due you... to obey and love you and your commands.

Jesus Knows

Bible Readings... Luke 22
Highlighted Verse... Luke 22:31-32 Jesus said, "Simon, listen to me! Satan has demanded the right to test each one of you, as a farmer does when he separates wheat from the husks. But Simon, I have prayed that your faith will be strong. And when you have come back to me, help the others."
Thoughts... These two verses set up Peter's boast that he is ready to go to jail with Jesus or even die for him, wherein Jesus responds that before the rooster crows Peter will have denied him three times. Jesus' original statement to Peter is reminiscent of the beginning of the Book of Job... namely that Satan has asked for and been given permission to test Peter. Jesus knows about Peter's bravado, Jesus knows Peter's weaknessesl, but Jesus also knows that Peter is capable of leading the group if he can make it back. After the resurrection, Jesus returns to give Peter a chance to redeem himself -- the same three times that Peter denied Jesus. The next thing you know, Peter is leading the disciples and taking the pulpit at Pentecost. Halleluia.
How it impressed me... Jesus knows my strengths and weaknesses too. He will walk with me and hold my hand each step of the way... if I will let him. He knows where I will fail, yet encourages me and prays for me... that I will grow in my love for him and trust in him. Halleluia.
My response to God... Jehova-Rohi, lead me beside the still waters, restore my soul, guide me in the paths of righteousness, that I may dwell in your house forever. Strengthen me when I am weak, encourage me when I doubt, and never, ever let me go.

A Stumbling Stone

Bible Readings... Luke 20
Highlighted Verse... Luke 20:18 - Everyone who stumbles over that stone will be broken to pieces, and it will crush anyone it falls on.
Thoughts... Jesus has just finished telling the parable about the evil farmers and finishes by telling the people that when the owner returns he will kill the tenant farmers and bring in new ones. The stone Jesus refers to is himself. He is warning the Pharisees, Saducees, and other religious leaders and teachers of the Law that if they stumbled over who he was and what he represented, then they would be broken and crushed.
How it impressed me... I am constantly amazed at how poorly I have paid attention to all the words in the scriptures. I am very familiar with the parables and main themes in Luke 20 and even the individual verses, but I have no recollection of this verse at all. How many of the words have I failed to see? More importantly, how much of the THE WORD have I failed to notice? When one doesn't notice things in their path, they stumble and fall... to be broken and crushed.
My response to God... Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path... Dear Lord, Help me to hear your silent whispers, understand your words of truth, and acknowledge your sovereignty over everything.

The Paradox of the Parables

Bible Readings... Luke 19
Highlighted Verse... Luke 19:26 - I tell you that to everyone who has, more will be given, but as for the one who has nothing, even what he has will be taken away.
Thoughts... Perhaps nothing confuses more than Jesus' treatment of money and the people who have it. In verse 26 we see apparent preferential treatment given to the rich, which is somewhat echoed earlier in the chapter in Zaccheus' story. But in chapter 18 we see how Jesus addressed the rich young ruler who had kept all of the commandments by telling the apostles that it is hard for the rich to enter the Kingdom of God; and chapter 16 has the parables of the rich man and Lazarus and the shrewd accountant who stole from his master yet was priased. So is it better to be poor or rich in God's eyes?
How it impressed me... Jesus never lets us rest in our own position, whatever it is. Whether we be poor or rich, intelligent or slow, black or white, slave or free... He takes no excuses, but simply calls us to follow Him -- Him alone. If we will follow him, then nothing else matters and if we will not follow him, then nothing else can help us.
My response to God... Father God, help me to choose to follow you above all else. Help me to set aside anything and everything that comes between us, but please be patient with my failures and forgive me my trespasses. Call out to me if I stray, that I would return immediately. Help me to rely on you and your strength to see me through.

The Kingdom of God

Bible Readings... Luke 17-18
Highlighted Verse... Luke 18:17 - I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.
Thoughts... Since the focus of verses 15 and 16 is on the children it is easy get caught up in ensuring that we bring the children to the Lord and that we take care not to hinder the children from seeking after God. While a worthy and necessary task, it misses another perspective that Jesus is trying to help us to see.
How it impressed me... When taken with a verse from chapter 17... The kingdom of God does not come with your careful observation ... because the kingdom of God is within you (Luke 17:20), we can see that new perspective. Jesus offers us the very Kingdom of God, and he wants to place it within us, if we will only receive it. Little children have a purity, innocence, and faith uncorrupted by the world around us and unconcerned with physics and scientific proof. We were visiting with some friends from church and their 4-year-old daughter took me by the hand to show me her princess kingdom. I'm certain that if offered the entire Kingdom of God, she would joyfully receive it, and ask for more. Jesus tells us we must do likewise if we wish to enter in. He is offering us much more than we can ever imagine if we will have it.
My response to God... Precious Jesus, still my heart, clear my mind, and steady my soul, so that I do not let the cares and worries of this world distract me from the vision that you have for me. Prepare me to receive your Kingdom that I may enter in.

Where's the Faith

Bible Readings... Luke 17-18
Highlighted Verse... Luke 18:8b - When the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?

Thoughts... Just one chapter ago, Jesus had the following exchange with his disciples... The apostles said to the Lord, "Increase our faith!" He replied, "If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, 'Be uprooted and planted in the sea,' and it will obey you. (Luke 17:5-6). And now Jesus wonders if he will even find that much faith when he comes.
How it impressed me... Jesus often chides his disciples about their lack of faith, yet they were with him for three years and saw many miracles and still lacked faith. Lest we think that we are justified or excused for our lack of faith, we need only turn back one more chapter to Luke 16 where we see the rich man who goes to hell and asks that Lazarus go back and talk to his brothers to save them. Jesus tells him that "If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead" (Luke 16:31). Oops, there goes my excuse!
My response to God... Dear Lord, "I do believe; help my unbelief." Help me set aside everything that gets in the way of my faith... that I would trust you completely, surrender to you completely, abandon my life to you.

Highly Exalted... in Whose Eyes?

Bible Readings... Luke 16
Highlighted Verse... Luke 16:15 - He said to them, "You are the ones who justify yourselves in the eyes of men, but God knows your hearts. What is highly valued among men is detestable in God's sight.
Thoughts... How often do I focus on what others think instead of focusing on what God thinks... the things that please God... the things that grieve God. Earlier tonight, a young man named Adam with a real heart for God spoke at our church about a mission trip he took to Taiwan earlier this year. He spoke of the persecuted church in China and the faith and determination of the Chinese Christians. The stories he told speak of a people that uphold the values that are important to God.
How it impressed me... Contrasting the lives of the believers and martyrs in China with what we see in America in the midst of the national conventions of both the Democrats and Republicans, these words ring especially true. We see both parties justifying themselves and their nominees in the eyes of men with scant attention paid to the Creator of the Universe.
My response to God... Father God, help me to grieve over the things that grieve you and rejoice in the things that please you. Help me to set aside the preferences of men to become holy -- set apart -- for you. Give our nation a leader who will set aside personal and party agendas and instead seek to bring us back to you.

Repentance

Bible Readings... Luke 15
Highlighted Verse... Luke 15:21 - The son said to him, "Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son."
Thoughts... The younger son realizes that he has hit bottom and is no longer worthy of his sonship. He humbly evaluates his worth as similar to one of his father's servants and dreams to be treated as such, then sets out to become less than what he was. In the moment of his greatest weakness he finds strength not of his own design, but in the very sonship that he chose to give up as his father receives him back.

How it impressed me... I normally think of the younger son as a scoundrel, but he shows a measure of repentance here unlike any that I've seen. Stripped of everything he displays a true repentance -- an after-thought, different from the former thought; a change of heart and mind. He no longer makes excuses, but rather simply asks to be. In his absolute surrender he receives the ultimate gift of reunification. The same unity that Jesus prayed for us... that we would be one with him.
My response to God... Gracious Lord, have mercy on me -- a sinner. Forgive me for all my tresspasses. I stand without excuse, guilty of all offenses, at your mercy. Help me to receive those whom you have reunited; make me worthy of your sonship through your sacrifice.

Who Has Ears?

Bible Readings... Luke 14, Luke 15:1
Highlighted Verse... Luke 14:35, Luke 15:1 - Anyone with ears to hear should listen and understand! Tax collectors and other notorious sinners often came to listen to Jesus teach.
Thoughts... Jesus has just finished some of his hard words...

Luke 14:26-27 “If you want to be my disciple, you must hate everyone else by comparison—your father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, even your own life. Otherwise, you cannot be my disciple. And if you do not carry your own cross and follow me, you cannot be my disciple.

He followed it up with a couple parable examples then says He who has ears to hear, let him hear. The next thing we read is that tax collectors and sinners were listening while the Pharisees and teachers of the law were grumbling.
How it impressed me... Jesus consistently sought out the sinners while ignoring or insulting the religious elite... yet the church of today often looks with disdain upon the sinner and welcomes the elite. I wonder about how the specific tax collectors and sinners that listened to him came to hear him. Did they just happen to be nearby when he was speaking? Or were they searching for something that transcended their current lives? Or did Jesus seek them out and invite them in like he invited Matthew? Since the answer may impact how we treat the sinners it is worth looking into. Somehow taking the approach of waiting for them to enter the doors of our church by luck or on their own volition doesn't seem to meet the spirit of Jesus' example, so we're left with seeking them where they live and inviting them in.
My response to God... Merciful God, I know that you desire that none should perish... help me to spread your love to all who need it regardless of their condition or position. Embolden me to share the Word and invite others into your house.
